A gasque is a dinner filled with song, entertainment, speech and laughter. The gasques usually consist of a three-course meal (the balls are often four-course meals) and are something very special for Uppsala’s student nations. Usually the sessions end with a party, but sometimes it happens that we arrange a sexa instead – a more relaxed dinner immediately after the first! Each gasque at Smålands has its own focus and everyone naturally deserves a visit.
Our various gasques
Reccegasquen
A gasque organized at the beginning of each semester. The Gasque is primarily aimed at the city’s new students (recentiors), so that they get a first chance to see what a gasque means and get to know other new students, but also older nation members are of course welcome. Held together with the nation of Gothenburg and takes place at Småland’s nation in the spring term and at Gothenburg nation in the autumn term. Dress Code: Suit
Ladies Supper
A a gasque organized every spring semester, by men, for women. The session is built around a theme that is secret for the ladies. This theme then forms the basis for what is to come during the evening. Tradition says that the men should offer dancing as well as singing and spex. Especially for the ladies’ supper is that the guests wear some form of headdress. Damsupén is many people’s favorite, both to visit and to work on. Dress code: suit and hat.
Gentlemen’s dinner
A gasque organized every fall semester, by ladies, for men. Like the ladies supper, the Gentlemen’s dinner is built around a secret theme with spex, song and dance as entertainment points. However, the autumn menu is traditional and consists of a herring plate, pea soup, hot and pancakes. Dress code: jacket.
May dinner
The tradition of celebrating May dinner on the first of May is an older student tradition than the Walpurgis celebration. The Smålands May Dinner always has the same menu. Nettle soup is followed by salmon, the main course is lamb and the dessert consists of strawberries. It is not uncommon for honorary members to be installed at the May dinner. After dinner, there will be a control dance and finally, the May dinner celebrants sit down for a seated sexa in the balmy May night. Dress Code: formal attire and student hat.
The spring ball
In the middle of May, the spring ball is organized, at the same time at all of Uppsala’s student nations. As the name suggests, the Spring Ball is one big tribute party to spring, with entertainment, food and drink in abundance. Everyone who has ever been to a spring ball knows what an explosion of joy and spring feelings it is and the festivities around the city do not end until well into Sunday afternoon. Dress code: formal attire, frack and ball gown
Crayfish party
Every autumn begins with a crayfish party- Småland’s most informal but extremely pleasant sitting. Before serving the Västerbotten cheese pie and the crayfish, you can make your own crayfish hat. According to tradition, crayfish should also be honoured during the session with a speech in its honour. Dresscode: odd jacket.
Autumn party
The autumn party, which is organized by Smålands nations Kamratförening, is a cross-generational party where Småländers from different generations get to meet and have a very fun evening together. The autumn party traditionally ends with a sitting sexa in the early hours. Very cozy! Dress code: suit.
The masquerade ball
For a couple of years now, the nation has been organizing a masquerade ball – a fantastic opportunity to put on a festive costume and arrange a Venetian-type mask, and then enjoy a well-composed four-course dinner with accompanying ballroom dancing. The ball is extremely popular, so be sure to buy a ticket in time! Dress code: festive costume (frack, ball gown) with mask.
Luccegasque
A gasque that is not completely unexpected in the sign of Christmas. Here you are offered a large Christmas buffet that contains all the Christmas delicacies that you can expect. In addition, the nation usually receives greetings from both Lucia and Santa Claus! Dress code: suit.
